4 Ways to Help Children with Speech and Language Problems at Home

Speech plays major part in a child’s development and there are number of things that can be done to help in your child’s development.


Spoken language provides the foundation for the development of reading and writing. Children with speech problem frequently struggle with reading, have difficulty expressing language. Problems can occur in the production, comprehension, and awareness of language at the sound, syllable, word and sentence.


Assessment and treatment of children with speech problems involve cooperative efforts with others such as parents, audiologists, classroom teacher, special educators, speech therapist dentist etc.


How you can help children at home -

  1. While reading books together. Always encourage them to name objects and read word aloud. This helps to strengthen your child’s speech and language skills.

  2. Describe your environment. Describes activities you share and the objects hat fill your environment. This will add more vocabs.

  3. Use variety of words to describe objects, you trigger the learning mechanism in your child. Naming words in both primary and secondary language can help your child practice and exercise their speech abilities.

  4. Sing out loud. When you and your child spend time singing songs, they are able to use and exercise their voice in therapeutic way. So whenever you and your child is spending quality time or while brushing, giving them bath or while combing sing with them this improve your bonding with your kid and will encourage to speak.
